I was one of the first Marines on the first deployment to Beirut. As peace keepers we wer not alowed to load our weapons or return any fire what so ever. As a marine this went aginst every thing i trained for. It's not even taught as history in america.
It truely cost me my career as a Marine. But being a Marine is to do as your told. I did. Maybe i have this all wrong. R/S Robert Lewis

No, Robert. In my humble opinion, you don't have it all wrong. You served, sacrificed and fulfilled your obligations. It was the media and/or U.N. politicos who had it all wrong. History should remind us that it was during those "peacekeeping" interludes that terrorists and dictators restocked their arsenals to attack again.

I pray we're not about to repeat this scenario in Iraq ....

I think often of the men in Vietnam who had to "request permission" from South Vietnam military officials to return fire. Too often -- permission was denied or granted on what role local VN officials had in protecting contraband or drug traffic in a particular area. None of that corruption was taught in history either.

I too was deployed early in Beirut.I also left the Marines for the same reasons, went against what we were trained for. Many in my unit felt like targets. Semper Fi. 2/8
